Romney emphasized the importance of character as he talked high finance and entrepreneurship Friday to an enthusiastic crowd at a conference in Salt Lake City dubbed Silicon Slopes, the nickname for Utah's cluster of tech companies. It was his second appearance this week as he ratchets up his public profile in his adopted home state.

Utah Republican Rep. Mia Love met with President Donald Trump on Tuesday to discuss immigration but did not discuss vulgar remarks the president is reported to have made about Haiti and Africa.

Farm Bill Debate In Congress Could Put Food Stamps At Risk

When Congress takes up the $140 billion farm bill, food programs such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program or (SNAP), formerly known as food stamps, could face funding cuts under a GOP push for welfare reform.  Anti-hunger advocates are concerned that millions of Americans could lose access to healthy foods if SNAP benefits are reduced or eliminated.

The chief of staff for Utah House Speaker Greg Hughes says he won't be running for re-election this year.

Greg Hartley says the speaker announced his decision to fellow state lawmakers Wednesday morning. He says Hughes will continue in his leadership role through the 2018 legislative session that will begin this month, and is planning to push hard on big issues.

The two men spoke briefly Thursday night. The White House says they spoke about Utah Sen. Orrin Hatch, who is retiring after four decades. Hatch's departure opens the door for Romney, who has been a frequent critic of Trump in the past.

Cache Valley Lawmaker Curt Webb Not To Run In 2018

As the opportunity for filing to run for political office in Utah nears, another Cache Valley lawmaker has announced he will not seek re-election.  Republican representative Curt Webb of Providence announced Monday morning he will not be running in 2018.

Last week, Logan Republican Representative Ed Redd announced problems with health would prevent him from running.

Seventeen Utah County state lawmakers have signed a letter asking Commissioner Greg Graves to resign.

The letter signed by 17 of the 22 legislators whose districts cover at least part of Utah County cites explosive and vulgar behavior by Graves.
