Utah's Own Creating Member Chapters In Northern Utah

Utah's Own is opening new membership chapters in northern Utah

Utah's Own is an organization that helps producers of local goods markets their vegetables, preserves and even skin care products to consumers. Right now, Salt Lake City is the only chapter of the organization, but the program is hoping to expand.

Educators with The Utah Department of Agriculture and Food’s Utah’s Own program provide training to state producers who want to connect with consumers. They are targeting northern Utah food producers who want to market and sell their goods to independent retailers and at gardeners markets. On Friday they will be in Brigham City.

“Our intent in Brigham City is to organize at least one chapter and possibly two," said Seth Winterton, the deputy director of marketing for Utah's Own. "One in Brigham City and probably one in the Cache Valley area, so we’re inviting any food entrepreneurs, companies, Utah’s Own members to attend this meeting in Brigham City and be a part of organizing those chapters there.”

He said local chapters are needed to support members who are seed producers, make pet food and create natural art.

“We think it will be important and it will also give them an opportunity to come together," Winterton said. "To network, to be able to have educational opportunities and use a significant recognizable brand in marketing their products.”

Already, kitchen farmers, Heirloom gardeners and family farmers from all over the state are part of Utah’s Own.

“We see the benefit two-fold," Winterton said. "One, with our producers having a strong recognized brand. But we also want our consumers to look for this brand using these local Utah products. When you buy local you’re supporting your communities, you’re supporting our state.”

Following this week’s training, Winterton said he hopes the interest in building more Utah’s Own chapters will increase and, if so, they will expand into other areas of the state.
