Update: Missing hikers found

A Smithfield couple who had been missing after a hike in the Bear River Mountains have been found safe.

Cache County Sheriff's officials say Chad and Lynn Hansen of Smithfield were located by search and rescue teams at approximately 11:30 Thursday morning.

In a news statement the office said family members received phone communication from the Hansens this morning, saying they were walking the main trail back to Tony Grove. The couple and their three dogs were found to be in good condition.

Search crews began looking for the hikers late Wednesday night after their 16-year-old son notified dispatchers that his parents never returned from a day hike in the Bear River Mountains earlier that day.

Cache County Sheriff Lt. Brian Locke says the teen dropped his parents off at Tony Grove Wednesday morning for a seven-mile hike from Tony Grove to Smithfield Canyon. The couple reportedly had water and three dogs.

Locke says a Life Flight helicopter was called for assistance, but the response was canceled before the aircraft arrived on scene.

All Search and Rescue members have been recalled and are working their way off the mountain.
