"Through Her Eyes" On Tuesday's Access Utah

Women capture Utah: They photograph fires, floods, crime scenes, politicians, sports, the arts, the outdoors, families, clergy and countless personal stories. "Through Her Eyes,"  a photojournalism exhibit at Salt Lake City Library's main branch is sharing Utah's stories as captured through the lenses of 20 of the state's female news photographers. The exhibit, in the Lower Urban Room Gallery, will be on display through June 24.

The names printed everyday under news photographs around the world belong to people whose craft so often illuminates the lives of those who are beyond our physical borders and personal boundaries.

They are the names of the women and men who, in the midst of conflict and confusion, try to capture moments that compel us to action, compassion,or reflection.

But for all the balanced coverage that the best news organizations make a mission of seeking out and revealing, it is only in recent decades they've pushed for gender equality within their own ranks. It was not until the early 1980s that the first female photojournalist was hired by the Salt Lake Tribune and women began to tell the story of Utah.

“Through Her Eyes” showcases the work of more than 20 female photojournalists whose careers have called them to document the American West. The exhibition highlights 20-plus years of images made for eight news organizations throughout the state. Some of the artists showcased made homes in Utah, while others have tumble-weeded through the landscape on their way to places like Alaska and Germany. Others have found their work featured in The New York Times or joined the staff of the Chicago Tribune. What unites each of them is their dedication to capturing the emerging and diverging culture of Utah and its place amidst the greater Intermountain West.

On Tuesday’s Access Utah we’ll hear stories of and from Kim Raff and Briana Scroggins photojournalists who organized and are featured in “Through Her Eyes.”
