"Mapping Region in Early American Writing" On Tuesday's Access Utah

University of Georgia Press

How did early American writers think about the spaces around them? Today on Access Utah we’re talking about regions—imagined politically, economically, racially, and figuratively—and the roles these regions played in the formation of American communities, both real and imagined.

The book is 'Mapping Region in Early American Writing,' published by University of Georgia Press. We’ll talk with the editors about these important mental mappings and cartographies, and how diverse populations imagined themselves, their communities, and their nation as occupying the American landscape.

Today on the program we're joined by Keri Holt, associate professor of English at Utah State University; Edward Watts, professor of English at Michigan State University; and John Funchion, associate professor of English and American studies at the University of Miami.

Tom Williams worked as a part-time UPR announcer for a few years and joined Utah Public Radio full-time in 1996. He is a proud graduate of Uintah High School in Vernal and Utah State University (B. A. in Liberal Arts and Master of Business Administration.) He grew up in a family that regularly discussed everything from opera to religion to politics. He is interested in just about everything and loves to engage people in conversation, so you could say he has found the perfect job as host “Access Utah.” He and his wife Becky, live in Logan.
