Expanded Fire Restrictions Include Ban on Charcoal Fires & ATVs

The new expanded bans apply to areas in southern Utah and northwest Arizona. The new restrictions go into effect in Washington, Iron, Beaver, Kane, Garfield, Wayne, Piute, Sevier and Sanpete Counties, as well as BLM lands in Coconino and Mohave Counties in Arizona.

The ban prohibits setting, building, maintaining, attending, or using open fire of any kind--including charcoal except as otherwise authorized. The new ban includes fires in developed areas and sites which were previously approved.

The ban also prohibits the use of a motorcycle, chainsaw, ATV, or other types of small combustion engines without an approved and working spark arrester. An ATV with a faulty spark arrester is blamed for starting the Shingle Fire east of Cedar City.

Up-to-date fire restrictions for the whole state can be found here.
