Dominion Energy customers received misleading mailers offering insurance services on the gas company letterhead. The utility company and a third party contractor are being investigated.

Chris Parker, the director of the Utah Division of Public Utilities, said the Division has received complaints about a mailer being sent to Utah gas consumers pitching insurance services on a Dominion Energy letterhead.

Parker said the mailings are from a third-party service contract provider called HomeServe. He said HomeServe provides valid service contracts and is licensed by the Department of Insurance, but it is not affiliated with the gas company, Dominion Energy Utah.

“Dominion Products and services, the non-utility Dominion company, and HomeServe made some kind of deal that allowed utility customer information to be used to send these mailings branded as Dominion mailings, touting the partnership with HomeServe,” Parker said.

Consumers who have contacted the Division of Public Utilities say the mailers with the Dominion Energy logos are confusing and look like gas bills or company correspondence.

“It’s pretty clear that the use of utility customer information and the endorsement by this one specific company by Dominion violated Dominion’s own assurances in the third party billing docket and I believe commission orders, which have the force of law,” Parker said.

The mailings have been halted and the Division's investigation is ongoing.
