Correction: Man And Boy Trapped In Mine By Rattlesnake

U.S. National Park Service

Correction: Latest releases do not identify the man and boy as father and son.

Corrected story as of 6/29/2015.

A man and a boy are safe after becoming trapped in a mineshaft near Lake Mead, Nevada--but the impediment was much different than what first responders expected to find.

At just after 10:30am Friday, authorities from Lake Mead National Recreation Area received a dispatch that a man and boy were trapped in a mineshaft.

Rescuers from Lake Mead, a heavy rescue unit from Henderson, Metro Search and Rescue and the BLM all responded.  Once authorities arrived and were  able to communicate with the two, they better understood the reason for the crisis.

The man and boy were unable to exit the mine because an especially stubborn rattlesnake refused to allow them to pass by.

The two spent about two hours trying to get past the pesky serpent, before they emerged from the shaft in good health, but tired, and… well, more than a little bit rattled.
