"The Arts and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, & Math) fields share a necessity for undertaking imaginative inquiry of what we perceive as truth and beauty...So many attempts to integrate art and science simply involve creating art at the end of a scientific breakthrough. With ARTsySTEM, we're merging the disciplines at the very inception of the process." That's USU Assistant Professor of Art Mark Lee Koven, who along with USU Ecology Center Director Nancy Huntly, is spearheading the ARTsySTEM project at Utah State University.
ARTsySTEM features a year-long artist and scientist residency, a visiting scholar lecture series, art and science workshops and public art exhibitions, along with a semester-long art and ecology graduate course taught by Lee Koven and Huntly. In concert with USU's 2015 Year of Water campaign, the project's programming focuses on water ecology.
Our guests on Thursday's AU include visiting artist Mark Dion, and Mark Lee Koven, who is also giving a presentation "Salty Metaphors: Land Art of the Great Salt Lake" as a part of the USU College of Science's Science Unwrapped series on Friday, March 20 at 7:00 p.m. in the Eccles Science Learning Center Emert Auditorium.
