Salt Lake City Council has voted to provide funding for 50 new police officers.

The Salt Lake City Council voted unanimously Tuesday to set aside funding to hire 50 new police officers, as well as additional support staff in the crime lab and social work office.

District Attorney Sim Gill has decided a Salt Lake City police officer was justified when he shot and killed a man at a gas station in September.

Gill on Wednesday released video of 39-year-old Michael Bruce Peterson attacking Officer Gregory Lovell, prompting Lt. Andrew Oblad to shoot Peterson.
