Environmental groups are blasting a legislative proposal by U.S. Rep. Chris Stewart that would create a small national park within the recently downsized Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument in Utah.

About 150 people rallied Tuesday on the steps of the state Capitol to make the point that the plan is a ruse to try and appease conservationists and open more land for mining and grazing.

Tax Payer Dollars To Bring Out-Of-State Tourists To Utah

Tax payer dollars going to Garfield County tourism is expected to bring out-of-state tourists and their money to Utah’s outdoor recreation industry. A grant from the Utah Office of Tourism is funding the marketing to outdoor enthusiasts.

Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke has completed the review of national monuments mandated by President Trump. He has not released his recommendations. The New York Times is reporting that those recommendations include reducing the size of 4 national monuments, including Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante in Utah. Reports are that Secretary Zinke may recommend a drastic reduction in size for Bears Ears.

In an effort to drum up support for the 27 western monuments being reviewed by Interior Sec. Ryan Zinke, the Center for Western Priorities, a conservation organization based in Colorado, stopped by 6 states throughout the West including Montana, Arizona and California.

President Trump Orders Review Of Utah Monuments

President Donald Trump signed an executive order to review twenty years of presidential monument designations on Wednesday. 

The Interior Department's review will include all designations larger than 100,000 acres made since 1996, including the 1.35 million acre Bears Ears National Monument and the 1.9 million acre Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument.

A new horned dinosaur species was unearthed in Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. The dinosaur lived around 77 million years ago during the Late Cretaceous period. The finding was recently published in the peer-reviewed journal, PLOS One. Eric Lund, lead author, said the dinosaur has some unique characteristics not seen in other horned species. In fact, the dinosaur’s name, Machairoceratops cronusi, is in reference to what many find to be its most distinguishing feature- bent ‘sword-like’ spikes.
