Utah lawmakers will hold a veto override session Wednesday afternoon to try to undo Gov. Gary Herbert's rejection of two bills expanding their powers.

The Republican governor in March vetoed a bill that would force the attorney general to release legal opinions requested by lawmakers and another bill allowing lawmakers to defend state laws in court, a role that belongs to the attorney general.

Utah lawmakers will call themselves into a special session to override Gov. Gary Herbert's vetoes of two bills the governor said went too far in expanding the Legislature's powers.

Legislative leaders announced Wednesday that more than two-thirds of the House and Senate favor an override.

Utah's governor has signed a bill allowing restaurants to take down state-mandated signs near their doors stating that they're a restaurant, "not a bar."

Utah's governor has signed a bill allowing women to get birth control directly from a pharmacist rather than visiting a doctor each time they want to obtain or renew a prescription for birth control.

Republican Gov. Gary Herbert signed the law Tuesday to allow women to get birth control pills, the patch or vaginal rings directly from a pharmacist. Similar laws are in place in a handful of other states, including California, Colorado and Oregon.

Gov. Gary Herbert has signed into law a measure allowing Utah school districts to install barricade locks on classroom doors.

The measure Herbert signed Monday was passed by the Legislature shortly after a February a school shooting killed 17 people in Florida and touched off calls for increased gun control and school safety around the country.

Utah lawmakers are working on a deal that would raise gas taxes and send more money to schools in order to stop a ballot initiative that would hike sales and income tax rates.

A bill unveiled Tuesday afternoon would ask voters in November to raise gas taxes by 10 cents a gallon.

The governor was responding to a question from a ninth-grade student on Wednesday when he said Utah will likely legalize medical pot — if there is appropriate research and scientific evidence to back it up.
