Sexual Assault Bystander Training Held Next Week

The Utah Coalition Against Sexual Assault (UCASA) is hosting a Bystander Intervention Training at the Utah State University campus. The coalition joined forces with Citizens Against Physical and Sexual Abuse (CAPSA), and the Utah State University Sexual Assault and Anti-Violence Information (SAVVI) office to host the training.



UPDATE: On Tuesday, First District Juvenile Court Judge Angela F. Fonnesbeck considered testimony in the preliminary hearing of the boy accused of actually shooting Deserae Turner. The judge has called for a trial in this case. The other defendant's updates can be found here.

For more than a hundred years, people have walked along the canal trails in Cache Valley. Dozens of dirt paths wind through the valley and are used for jogging and biking. These trails connect communities together and community leaders want to preserve the trails.

'Operation Underground Railroad' Saves 29 Haitian Girls

A recent Operation Underground Railroad rescue mission in Haiti saved 29 girls suspected to be sex trafficking victims.


The operatives also arrested 9 traffickers. Alongside Haitian officials and Haiti’s Minor Protection Brigade, the Utah organization spent two months undercover planning the rescue mission by researching the location, meeting with traffickers and setting up the operation.


As director of the Utah State University Center for Women and Gender, Ann Austin is responsible for finding and scheduling guest speakers who can address issues effecting women throughout the world. During a recent lecture by New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof, students and community members in Cache Valley were told that worldwide, violence toward women is a modern-day moral matter.

The first thing you notice when you walk into the Logan Islamic Center is the quiet. Even footsteps are muffled, since shoes are left at the door. The upstairs prayer area is carpeted and empty, leaving room where worshippers can kneel and pray facing east. Downstairs is more relaxed. Bookshelves hold boxes of crayons and snacks for kids. A spirit of peace and reflection fills every corner of the mosque.


On Tuesday, President Trump said he wants to cut billions from non-defense programs to give to the defense and security budget. The proposed budget changes could affect the Center for Persons with Disabilities in Utah.


Over the course of his campaign and election, President Trump has repeatedly criticized the media. Just last week the president said in a tweet that "fake news media" such as the New York Times and CNN are enemies of the American people. However, a recent national survey shows American voters trust the media more than they trust the president to tell the truth.


Youth of color are treated differently than their white peers, according to a recent report from the American Civil Liberties Union of Utah. The report shows significant racial inequality in the state juvenile justice system, even when youth commit the same crime.


On January 18, experts in mental health, suicide prevention and social media met with military officials at the Pentagon to discuss how social media can find individuals at risk for suicide and offer them help and resources.

Is marriage worth the investment? That’s a question many American men face, and some agree that marriage means a lack a freedom. University of Utah professor Nicholas Wolfinger disagrees. His latest research brief shows that the benefits of marriage definitely outweigh the sacrifices.

Outdoor clothing company Patagonia says it is boycotting Outdoor Retailer shows held in Utah. The decision comes in response to a resolution signed on Friday by Governor Gary Herbert calling on President Donald Trump to repeal the newly named Bears Ears National Monument.



Last week President Trump signed an executive order that suspended refugee resettlement and temporarily banned travel from seven Muslim-majority countries. 


The majority of college-age men are uncomfortable in a situation when women are being mistreated. But they usually don’t express their opinions when they think they are the only ones who are uncomfortable. Research shows, however, that bystanders can play a significant role in preventing sexual assault. A Utah State University awareness campaign that will launch on January 30 is asking bystanders to take action.

The second leading cause of hearing loss in the United States comes from congenital cytomegalovirus, or CMV. It is also the most common congenital infection among infants, affecting about 1 in 150 children in the United States each year. Infants who contract the infection before birth can suffer from hearing loss and potential damage in the brain, eyes or inner ear.
