Women Make Gains In Utah's Recent Elections

Dec 4, 2017

This year's election season brought historic wins for women in Utah, where at least four cities elected their first female mayors.

Women across Salt Lake, Davis, Weber and Utah counties will gain 6 percent more council or mayoral positions come January, holding a total 27 percent of all seats.

Utah Valley University's 2017 Utah women in politics brief says that still puts Utah behind the national average of about 30 percent of women represented in municipal government.

Real Women Run, a Utah-based nonpartisan initiative that looks to increase the number of women involved in politics at all levels, says more than 400 women campaigned for positions in this year's elections — double the number compared to 2016, although that was not a municipal election year.
