West Valley City Police Seeking National Accreditation

dare.org

West Valley City's police force is seeking national accreditation three years after public confidence in the force has decreased.

Police in the Salt Lake City suburb lost the trust of many residents after the controversial shooting of an unarmed woman in 2013.

Another contributing factor was the investigation into and eventual disbanding of the Neighborhood Narcotics Unit.

That investigation led to the dismissal of more than 100 criminal court cases.

West Valley police Chief Lee Russo was appointed to the force in August 2013 and says he knew something needed to be done to restore public trust and start a dialogue with the community.

Russo says the department is in the final phase of seeking national accreditation, a status held by less than five percent of law enforcement agencies.
