Utah Lawmakers To Take Up Online Sales Tax, Shipping Hub

Utah lawmakers will meet for a special session to force some online companies to collect sales tax and make changes to a planned shipping hub in Salt Lake City.

Republican Gov. Gary Herbert called lawmakers back into session Wednesday after completing negotiations with lawmakers and members of the Salt Lake City Council on the contentious trade facility.

The session also follows the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling last month allowing states to force online retailers to charge customers sales tax.

Utah already collects roughly $140 million in taxes under voluntary agreements with major online businesses such as Amazon and Airbnb.

Officials expect that an additional $60 million is up for grabs from companies not under the current tax umbrella. However, most of that money has already been earmarked for a tax break for manufacturers.
