Utah Apartment Fire Displaces 19 Low-Income Residents

news.stlpublicradio.org

A South Salt Lake apartment fire has displaced many low-income residents.

The fire broke out Sunday at a low-income apartment building. Officials say all residents were safely evacuated and one man was taken to a hospital for smoke inhalation.

Bob Tuttle with the Salt Lake County Housing Authority says two units are completely gone. He estimates that 19 people were displaced.

Among the residents are refugees from several countries and chronically homeless individuals. Because many are on fixed income, Tuttle says it will be challenging for them to recover after the fire.

According to the Tuttle, the county's insurance on the building will not cover the residents' belongings lost in the fire.

An estimate of the damage was not immediately available.
