USU President Albrecht Retiring

Utah State University President Stan Albrecht.

After more than a decade as president of Utah State University, Stan Albrecht is retiring.

Albrecht announced his decision Wednesday in an email sent out to the university’s faculty and staff. This week marks 11 years since he was appointed to the position back in 2005.

In the email, Albrecht wrote that his passion for higher education came from the opportunities it gave him.

“I am the son of parents who did not have the chance for a college education. Yet, through great sacrifice, they made that opportunity available to each of their six children,” Albrecht wrote. “Higher education opened doors to worlds I never otherwise would have imagined. This is one of the reasons I have been so passionate about our regional campus and distance education programs, and about the overall mission of a land-grant university like ours. It is easy to care about a place when its very existence is based on the principles of access and opportunity for all.”

During Albrecht’s tenure, USU increased the development of its research programs and regional campuses. Since 2005, student enrollment at USU has grown and in 2013 the university’s sports teams joined the Mountain West Conference.

Before arriving at USU, Albrecht was an administrator at the University of Florida.
