During a long and distinguished career with the U.S. State Department, Ambassador Christopher Hill was sent to some of the most dangerous outposts of American diplomacy, from the Balkans to North Korea to Iraq. In his memoir, “Outpost: Life on the Frontlines of American Diplomacy,” he takes us from one-on-one meetings with Slobodan Milosevic, to Bosnia and Kosovo, to the Dayton conference, where a truce was brokered. He draws upon lessons learned as a Peace Corps volunteer in Cameroon early on in his career and details his extensive experience as a U.S. ambassador.
He was the first American Ambassador to Macedonia; Ambassador to Poland, where he also served earlier in the depth of the cold war; Ambassador to South Korea and chief disarmament negotiator in North Korea. He served as Assistant Secretary of State East Asian and Pacific Affairs and his last post was as Ambassador to Iraq in 2009-2010. He’ll join Tom Williams to talk about current events around the world on Access Utah.
Now Ambassador Christopher Hill is the Dean of the Josef Korbel School of International Studies at the University of Denver. He is coming to Utah next week for a tour of events, including a luncheon with the League Of Women Voters of Utah followed by a discussion at the Hinckley Institute of Politics at the University of Utah. Ambassador Hill will later give a presentation, "Understanding The Syrian War," to the Salt Lake Committee on Foreign Relations. These events will be on Tuesday, April 5th, in Salt Lake City.
