Utah Public Radio is pleased to be among the winners of the Associated Press Television and Radio Association 2013 awards for excellence in broadcast journalism.

KUSU-FM received two awards in the annual competition that brings together TV and radio journalism from across the western United States.

Producers Matthew Jensen and Jennifer Pemberton won first place for their series, Five Billion Gallons, about water use and infrastructure in arid Utah.

Pemberton also won second place for coverage of an ongoing news story for her work covering air quality topics throughout northern Utah.

A list of the winners was announced Monday.

"The APTRA Awards represent the highest standards of broadcast journalism in the western 13 state APTRA region," said board president John Shaffer. "This year the APTRA Awards were more competitive than they have been in the past thanks to an increase in the numbers of entries, both on the individual and station level."

The APTRA Awards were judged by AP-member broadcasters in Mississippi and Texas.
