Relief for Southern Utah Flood Victims

The weather forecast in Southern Utah calls for clearing skies. That's good news for folks in a community west of St. George.

About 30 homes and over a dozen businesses are cleaning up water, mud, and debris after the breach of a dike for retention pond in Santa Clara on Tuesday.

The pond was already filled to its brim with recent rainfall, softening the earthen structure. On Tuesday another downpour proved too much for the dike, sending a wall of water down Canyon View Drive.

The call for volunteers went out and hundreds responded. The area has been declared a disaster but it's still unclear whether state or federal money will be available for those affected.

Evacuated residents and business owners were allowed back in to assess the damage. Now the real work begins as victims and volunteers roll up their sleeves to go to work.

An account has been established to provide relief for city residents and businesses affected by the flood. Donations can be made at the State Bank of Southern Utah into an account called Santa Clara Flood Relief Fund 2012.
