Personal Advice Essays on Access Utah Wednesday

The advice column "Dear Sugar" was taken on as a project by author Cheryl Strayed, in March 2010 where she found the way to being Sugar.

At the time, Strayed was waiting for an editor to make notes on a previous book, "Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail," when she was approached by author David Almond to take over an advice column she said yes.

"It seemed interesting to me. It made me curious. It was a new opportunity and I tend to be someone who likes to follow that, when something sparks my interest it usually leads me good places, so I said I'd do it."

But the column is more like personal essays, with practical advice and guidance in the mix.  Strayed said she uses her own experience, to answer questions posed to her.

"I really try to address the whole range of the human experience. A wife who's husband has been unemployed and won't get a job, about a man who's friends were saying not-so-nice things, and what he should do. This column is about being human."

Strayed is reading at the King's English Bookstore in Salt Lake City on Tuesday July 31 at 7 p.m.
