A federal judge in Las Vegas has declared a mistrial in the case against Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy and others involved in a 2014 standoff with government agents.
Judge Gloria Navarro made the decision after determining that government prosecutors withheld exculpatory evidence in violation of the Brady doctrine.
The future of the government’s case is uncertain. It will likely be after the new year that Judge Navarro will announce whether the mistrial is “with” or “without prejudice”—a key factor in determining whether prosecutors might proceed with a new trial.
In the meantime, it is up to a Pretrial Release Officer to decide whether the defendants might be free to spend the holiday with family, or whether they will remain under previous, court-ordered custody arrangements.
