Mesquite woman charged for cancer fraud

In August a woman from Vernal was arrested for fraud for pretending her daughter had cancer. On Friday, a woman from Mesquite, Nev. was taken into custody on similar charges.

Shawnanna Star Flores, 36, is accused of falsely stating that her 7-year-old son had a rare form of liver cancer.

A benefit car wash was held on Aug. 24. The benefit event raised $404; a fund was established at Wells Fargo Bank and money jars were placed in businesses around Mesquite. There were also other future fundraisers scheduled.

Flores is charged with felony fraud, obtaining money under false pretenses, felony child abuse, and felony theft. Clark County child protective services is continuing its own investigation.
