Logan City Council Approves City-Wide Bike Lanes

Cycling activists packed the Logan City council meeting on Tuesday to show their support for the bicycle and pedestrian master plan, also known as bike-ped. The advocates biked together to the meeting and wore their helmets to show their enthusiasm for the plan.

The resolution is intended to make cycling and walking safer and more readily available to Logan residents by establishing bike lanes throughout the city.

“This was needed in this city because we have really wide streets and we are looking to diversify the transportation options within the valley,” said Stephanie Tomlin, the program coordinator for Aggie Blue Bikes at Utah State University.

Logan has an estimated 2.5 times the amount of pedestrians and 5 times the amount of cyclists compared with state averages. Not to mention USU won the National Bike Challenge in 2015.

Tomlin says she hopes the resolution will encourage even more Logan residents to choose walking and bicycling as their main mode of transportation.

It is pretty incredible the power that a bike has with regard to transportation,” she said. “It creates a more vibrant city.”

The resolution was passed 5-0, which was followed by a standing ovation from the elated cyclists.

“This was monumental to pass essentially the first comprehensive bicycle-pedestrian master plan,” Tomlin said.
