LDS Leaders Respond To Supreme Court Ruling

Church officials indicated that their stance on the issues of marriage has not changed.

Soon after the Supreme Court’s ruling was announced the leadership from the Utah-based Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints released a statement reassuring members of the faith that the Court’s decision does not alter what they say is the Lord’s doctrine.

Friday’s reaction to the Supreme Court’s ruling on same-sex marriage is not the first time that the LDS Church has spoken out on what they consider to be a core tenet of their faith. Reaction by Utahns ranged from full support to qualified acceptance.

“My personal beliefs are that through the Bible that it’s wrong but I don’t hold that against people if that’s their desire. If they want to do that, that’s their prerogative if they want to do that.”

"I think it’s terrific, I think it’s time.”

“I think it’s cool. They should have the same right to be miserable as we do.”

“My feeling is this: I’m not a real Bible-goer, but if I was living in this society where everybody’s so staunchly on Mormonism, and really followed the Bible, then it doesn’t followed the Bible.”

The LDS Church, however, is maintaining its stance on the issue. In a statement released to the media, church officials called for people to respect those on all sides of the debate.

“The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints acknowledges that following today’s ruling by the Supreme Court, same-sex marriages are now legal in the United States," the statement said. "While showing respect for those who think differently, the Church will continue to teach and promote marriage between a man and a woman as a central part of our doctrine and practice.”

In 2014, a letter from the Church’s First Presidency to local leaders stated that meetinghouses owned by the LDS Church could not be used to host same-sex wedding ceremonies or receptions.
