People in Iron County are using the word “historic” to describe Monday’s public school closings affecting the Iron County School District and Southern Utah University
Heavy snows fell in the overnight hours of Sunday night and Monday morning. City, county and state crews took to the streets early, but couldn’t make headway in time for safe travel on local roads. Iron County School District Superintendent Shannon Dulaney:
"That was our number one concern. We didn’t want to put our students and their families as well as our school district transportation people in any kind of danger."
SUU President Scott Wyatt made an early morning decision based on the same observations.
"We had a report from some of our snow crews that they couldn’t get into Parowan and they couldn’t get in from Kanarraville. And then our people onsite were telling us that the state hadn’t yet got to plow the roads around campus. That was 6:30 a.m. ... I assume they were all working on i-15."
School districts in beaver and Millard counties likewise canceled classes
