Eighteen-year-old Ryker Lance Dattage of Hyde Park was near Franklin Basin in Logan Canyon when the vehicle he was driving drifted into oncoming traffic. He was killed on impact after colliding with a Ford F-350 pickup truck driven by 57-year old Bruce Wilson of Hooper.

“Any head-on crash is a bad crash,” said Utah Highway Patrol Lt. Lee Perry. “But when you have one vehicle that clearly has no breaking and doesn’t stop, then it’s going to be more horrific than something where they both see each other and they can try to come to a stop.”

Perry said Wilson was traveling with two boy scouts after boating at Bear Lake when he tried to pull off the road to avoid Dattage.  Traffic was delayed while Life-Flight medical crews assisted and transported Wilson to a hospital in Ogden.  His two passengers were taken by ambulance to a Logan hospital.

All four individuals involved in the accident were wearing seat belts.

“This is one where we had some high speeds involved,” Perry said.  “This is one where even seat belts won’t save lives.”

Dattage was a recent graduate of Skyview High School in Smithfield.
