Holiday Season Brings More Than Wanted

www.va.gov

Viruses are in full throat as the holiday season approaches. Many wonder what to look for when that cough comes. So what spreads here in Utah?

“What you need to worry about are the seasonal strains of influenza.”

Dale Barnard, Research Associate Professor at the Veterinary Science of Bacteriology at Utah State University, says that influenza viruses are readily transmissible

That virus is transmitted from older siblings, those going to elementary school, to the infants.

So, what do local communities need to do? And what do people need to do? Andy Anderson, Principal Lecturer at the College of Science in the Biology Department at USU, says that going to the hospital or your local physician is a good start.

“We have very fine physicians in our hospitals and our public health departments, whose job it is to monitor the outbreak of known diseases and unknown diseases.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says the people most at risk are those with chronic medical conditions, such as asthma, diabetes and heart disease.
