Comic Con Blasts Off In Salt Lake, Poised To Break Records

The Salt Lake Comic Con opened Thursday, and runs through the weekend.

Salt Lake Comic Con kicked off Thursday, and the allure of pop culture, science fiction and comics is expected to break attendance records.

Last year’s event was the first in Salt Lake history and surpassed expectations. About 72,000 people attended the Con in 2013, setting a new record in attendance for a convention in Utah. The 72,000 people also set new highs in attendance for a first-year comic con event.

Excitement over the convention has expanded vastly since last year, as evidenced by the more than 120,000 tickets which have already been sold for this year’s Con.

First time Salt Lake Comic Con attendee Lotti Sidwell said she’s eager to go and hopes to be able to express her more adventurous side.

“I’ve always been a huge video game and book nerd,” Sidwell said. “I’ve always wanted to go to comic con and show off my nerdiness without shame, and have other people there who are also shamelessly nerdy. I’m really excited.”

The Salt Lake Comic Con runs Sept. 4 through Sept. 6 at the Salt Palace Convention Center and features artists, actor and other celebrities from a variety of different pop culture media.
