Cancer Patient's Basketball Dreams Come True

Five-year-old JP Gibson, who suffers from cancer, signed a special one-day contract with the Utah Jazz on Monday. He then joined the team in uniform for the opening pre-season team scrimmage at Energy Solutions Arena in Salt Lake City. Gibson had been diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in 2012.

Gibson, donning a jersey bearing the number one, was able to play in the scrimmage. After being passed the ball and dribbling down the court, Jazz center Rudy Gobert lifted Gibson up to the rim so he could dunk. The slam dunk caused a great cheer from the crowd and Gibson received high fives from the other players.

Gibson’s dream-come-true was through a partnership between the Jazz and the “Anything Can Be” project. The project asks children with cancer what their dreams are and then creates storybooks based on their answers.
