The Bergdahl Exchange and National Security on Thursday's Access Utah

United States Army

U. S. Army Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl was recently freed in Afghanistan in exchange for five Taliban prisoners from Guantanamo. Some say that the United States should not negotiate with extremists and that this deal places American troops under increased danger, to say nothing of the harm the freed inmates could possibly do.

Others say that the U. S. government has a solemn duty to bring all of its people home from war. Amos Guiora served for 19 years in the Israel Defense Forces and was involved in the release of Palestinian prisoners in his role as a judge advocate general. He is now a University of Utah law professor and expert on counter-terrorism and national security. He recently wrote an article for the New York Times about his past involvement in prisoner release negotiations for Israel. He’ll join us from Jerusalem for Thursday’s AU.

Tom Williams worked as a part-time UPR announcer for a few years and joined Utah Public Radio full-time in 1996. He is a proud graduate of Uintah High School in Vernal and Utah State University (B. A. in Liberal Arts and Master of Business Administration.) He grew up in a family that regularly discussed everything from opera to religion to politics. He is interested in just about everything and loves to engage people in conversation, so you could say he has found the perfect job as host “Access Utah.” He and his wife Becky, live in Logan.
