After-School Club Proposed By The Satanic Temple

An “After-School Satan” club is coming to an elementary school in Utah. The Satanic Temple is a nationwide religion that is starting an after-school club for elementary students all over the country, including Vista Elementary School in Taylorsville, Utah.

Chalice Blythe, the founder of The Satanic Temple - Utah Chapter, said The Satanic Temple is an atheistic religion.

"We’re atheistic Satanists, so we don’t believe in a literal Satan," Blythe said. "Satan for us is just a literary metaphor for the ultimate rebel against the ultimate tyrant."

She said The After-School Satan club at Granite School District will be like any other club, where students will participate in projects and creative learning opportunities. They will also learn songs and do art projects.

"But we’re not proselytizing to these kids, we’re not converting them to Satanism," she said. "But we are teaching them things that are deeply held beliefs of ours. Things that we as Satanists live our lives by. And we feel that to any child, whether that be a satanist child or an atheist or even a Christian child, it is stuff that they can use in their lives for their betterment."

Blythe said she hopes to teach kids about Satanist values like science, problem solving, critical reasoning, common sense and creative expression.

The After-School Satan club was started in response to the Good News Club, an Evangelical Christian after-school club.

Granite School District officials said under state statute, the facilities are civic centers and they are required to allow rental access to any entity outside of school hours.
