Hazmat Crew Snuffs Out Chemical Spill In Provo

Several blocks were closed off around a chemical company in Provo while firefighters and a Hazmat crew responded to a chemical spill.

Neighbors spotted smoke coming through the roof at Wiltec on West Street about 4 p.m. on Wednesday.

Provo Fire Battalion Chief Tom Augustus told the Provo Daily Herald that the company that studies chemical reactions was testing sulfur trioxide when a research tube failed. He said the failure caused an unexpected chemical reaction that involved a significant amount of smoke.

Canyons Superintendent Resigns

The superintendent of the Canyons School District has announced his resignation.

David Doty told school board members Tuesday night he’ll step down at the end of June to take a job with the Utah-based education reform company, Education Direction.

Doty has been superintendent since 2008 when the district was created and split from the Jordan School District. He says his decision to leave is due partly to his desire to spend more time with family.

In his new job, Doty will lead efforts to improve student outcome in public school districts and colleges.

Two explosions rocked the finish line at the Boston Marathon Monday afternoon. While people panicked, police tried to make sense of what just happened and prevent any other explosions.

According to the Boston Marathon website, more than 350 runners registered for Monday's race were Utahns. One of these runners, Kristen Munson said she was one of the lucky ones.

"I'm grateful that people I know are safe and I'm really kind of devastated," she said.

AP reports indicate three people were killed and more than 100 were injured.

Kennecott Mining to Continue after Slide in Bingham Mine

Officials with Kennecott Utah Copper say a landslide that they’ve been anticipating for months has happened in Brigham Canyon Mine. UPR’s Brianna Bodily has more on the condition of employees, and precautions Kennecott took to avoid injury.

Kennecott spokesman Kyle Bennett said no one was injured when the slide took place, at about 9:30 p.m. Wednesday in the North East part of the mine.

USU Students Attempt A World Record

With duct tape, spray paint, and a lot of folding; USU students, like Kayla Arrington, are trying to break a world record.

"Other people, other groups, attempt to break Guinness world records. So, in the spirit of that, we are doing this with a cardboard fort."

And in the spirit of Utah State University, they've chosen Old Main as their sculpture subject.

Kelby Peterson, a team member, has possibly the most prominent job.

Elderly Hyrum Man Burned in Fire

Update: The University of Utah Burn Unit Spokeswoman, Melinda Rogers confirmed that Ray Jessop succumbed to his injuries Thursday morning at 2:20 A.M.

Ray Jessop, 81, was still on fire when his neighbor, Braxton Wood, found him at about 11 A.M. Wednesday.

Suffering third degree burns on 90 percent of his body, Jessop was taken to Logan Regional Hospital and then airlifted to the University of Utah burn Center in Salt Lake City.

His neighbor, Toni Wood, said this incident only adds to the list of health complications he has been struggling with.

Boy Scouts of America Reject Troop Sponsored By a Gay Rights Organization

A proposed Boy Scouts troop sponsored by a Utah gay rights organization has been rejected by Boy Scouts of America.

Valerie Larrabe of the Utah Pride Center says they were told that the mission of their organization didn’t properly align with the goals of Boy Scouts.

Larrabe says the troop would have included 10 middle-school aged boys and been guided by straight troop leaders.
